Gaps in coverage you can fix for a few bucks
Uninsured Motorists covered on your umbrella?
Uninsured and underinsured auto coverage is standard on your personal auto policy. It protects you in case you are hit by a motorist that has no insurance or has low limits. Your policy kicks in up to the limit you choose. If an uninsured motorists causes a serious accident with multiple passengers, $300,000 or $500,000 can be eaten up in a hurry. Make sure that limit is extended into your umbrella and gives you the full $1,000,000 limit. Cost: about $150
Have you inherited any valuables lately?
Many insureds in their 40s and 50s may have inherited valuable art, artifacts, jewelry or other items from their recently deceased parents. Take a look around. Some of those items may need to be "itemized" in order to get the full coverage in the event of a loss. Cost: about $200
Only company cars in your house?
There is a coverage called "drive other car coverage" that extends a small personal policy to your family in case all the autos in your home are business vehicles. Why bother? Your commercial auto coverage doesn't cover you renting a car for personal use, or if your kid borrows someones car and injures another person. There are a few important gaps taken care of easily. Cost: $180
